Mumbai, Aug 1 (NationPress) The two Maharashtra government-operated entities, Sant Rohidas Leather Industries and Charmakar Development Corporation Limited (LIDCOM) and Dr Babu Jagjivanram Leather Industries Development Corporation Limited (LIDKAR), have recently clarified that the traditional and culturally significant Kolhapuri chappal, which hails from Maharashtra and Karnataka, has been officially awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) tag. The rightful ownership of this GI tag is exclusively held by these corporations.
This announcement follows the recent unveiling of the spring/summer 2026 men's collection by the renowned Italian luxury brand Prada, which took place in June. During the show, a model showcased leather sandals that bore a remarkable resemblance to the GI-tagged traditional Kolhapuri chappals, igniting a wave of reactions across social media and among the artisan communities.
In the aftermath, a collective of lawyers took action by filing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Bombay High Court, arguing that Prada's use of a design protected under the GI registration infringed on intellectual property laws.
On July 16, the court dismissed the PIL, clarifying that only the recognized GI holders—specifically, the leather industry development corporations of Maharashtra and Karnataka—are entitled to pursue any legal action in such cases, as stated in the government announcement.
In light of these developments, LIDCOM and LIDKAR have reiterated their status as the officially recognized global GI holders of the Kolhapuri chappal. Their joint statement emphasized that no individual or organization other than themselves is permitted to engage in discussions, negotiations, or representations with Prada or similar international brands.
The heritage of Kolhapuri chappals can be traced back to the 12th-century saint tradition and is intertwined with the progressive reforms initiated by Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj in the 20th century.
LIDCOM Managing Director Prerna Deshbhratar and LIDKAR Managing Director KM Vasundhara highlighted in a joint statement that their mission extends beyond the mere protection of the geographical indication; it is also about safeguarding the rights of countless local leather artisans and firmly positioning this cultural heritage on both national and international stages.
