Kolkata, July 1 (NationPress) A trial court in Kolkata has extended the police custody of the three suspects, identified as Monojit Mishra, Jaib Ahmed, and Pramit Mukhopadhyay, involved in the rape of a law student within the college grounds at Kasba in South Kolkata, until July 8. Additionally, the court has also prolonged the police custody of Pinaki Banerjee, a security guard at the law college, until July 4. Following the incident on June 25, the victim stated to the police that Banerjee was the “only helpless” witness to the crime.
The victim reported that Mishra, Ahmed, and Mukhopadhyay forcibly took her from the common room to the guard room, expelled Banerjee from the room, and then committed the assault.
With their previous custody period concluding on Tuesday, the accused were brought back before the trial court. The public prosecutor, Sourin Ghosal, requested an additional 10-day extension of custody; however, the court only approved an extension until July 8.
The lawyers representing the three main suspects refrained from filing a bail application, expressing their intention to assist in the investigation process. They did request that legal counsel be present during the interrogation and that they be allowed to inspect the crime scene within the college.
Mishra, a former student of the college, has emerged as the primary suspect in this egregious crime, while Ahmed and Mukhopadhyay have been recognized as facilitators.
