Kolkata, June 27 (NationPress) Kolkata Police apprehended three young men for allegedly assaulting a young woman within the grounds of a well-known law college in the city, as reported by police on Friday. The victim and two of the suspects are students of the South Kolkata Law College (New Campus), while the third individual is an alumnus.
Sources from the city police revealed that one suspect was taken into custody late on Thursday night, with the other two being arrested in the early hours of Friday.
All three suspects are set to be presented before a city court in South Kolkata on Friday afternoon, where the public prosecutor will request their police custody.
According to police insiders, the investigation began following a complaint lodged by the victim at the Kasba Police Station in South Kolkata on the evening of June 25.
In her report, she claimed she was sexually assaulted in the common room of the law college located in Kasba between 7 P.M. and 9 P.M. on that evening.
She also identified the three accused in her complaint.
After her complaint was filed, she was promptly taken for a medical examination at the state-run National Medical College & Hospital in central Kolkata.
The medical examinations confirmed the validity of her claims, leading the Kasba Police to take immediate action and arrest the three suspects one after another.
The police are currently obtaining a confidential statement from the victim in front of a Judicial Magistrate.
Investigators have secured footage from the CCTV cameras installed around the law college premises, including the area where the incident occurred.
Authorities have also begun recording statements from faculty, fellow students, and security personnel at the law college.
This incident has reignited concerns regarding women's safety in the city, particularly within educational institutions.
“The law and order situation in Kolkata and across the state has deteriorated. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will likely downplay this as a 'minor incident' or attribute it to 'romantic misunderstandings.' She has no right to remain in office for even a moment longer. This is a serious issue, and we will pursue it to the end,” stated the Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari.
At the time of this report, there was no response from any Trinamool Congress leader, including Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who was in Digha, East Midnapore district, participating in the Ratha Yatra program at the Lord Jagannath Temple.
