Kolkata police on Sunday, 7 June raided the residence of All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) councillor Mohammad Jasimuddin in Jorasanko, central Kolkata, in connection with a case filed under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, according to officials. Officers from the Jorasanko police station arrived at his house, located adjacent to College Street, accompanied by Central forces.

What Happened at the Councillor's House

Central force personnel took up positions outside the residence while police officers attempted to enter and question Jasimuddin. According to reports, the councillor did not open the door. As of the morning hours, police were still waiting near the premises for a response, with officers reportedly arriving at around 6 am.

Word of the raid spread quickly through the neighbourhood, drawing a crowd of local residents. Several people gathered outside the house reportedly holding eggs, stating they wished to throw them at the councillor who, in their words, had 'harassed and troubled them.'

The POCSO Case Link

The raid follows the Saturday arrest of a person described as close to Jasimuddin from the same area, on charges of molesting a minor. Police are believed to want to question the councillor in the context of that case. The exact scope of his alleged involvement had not been officially confirmed at the time of reporting.

Jasimuddin represents ward number 39 of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC). Local residents have previously raised complaints against him, particularly over his conduct related to real estate development in the area.

Seventh Trinamool Councillor in the Crosshairs

This is not an isolated incident. So far, seven TMC councillors of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation have been arrested by police on various charges, including extortion, corruption, and alleged involvement in post-2021 election violence. The pattern points to a sustained crackdown on civic representatives affiliated with the ruling party in West Bengal.

On Saturday, councillor Bappaditya Dasgupta was apprehended in Patuli on extortion allegations. When he was taken to the police station, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers and supporters gathered outside, raising slogans of 'Chor Chor' (thief) against him.

Wider Pattern of Civic Accountability

On Sunday morning, police also raided the house of yet another KMC councillor elsewhere in Kolkata, indicating that enforcement action against municipal representatives is intensifying. The back-to-back operations signal growing pressure on TMC's civic machinery in the city, coming amid broader political turbulence in West Bengal.

As the situation outside Jasimuddin's residence remained unresolved, further developments were awaited from the authorities.
