Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 22 (NationPress) Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Nand emphasized on Sunday that any instances of booth jamming, vote rigging, or booth capturing will be met with zero tolerance during the upcoming Assembly elections in the city.
This warning followed Nand's inspection of the Bhangar Police Station situated on the southern fringes of Kolkata.
The Election Commission is enforcing rigorous oversight concerning election preparations and security measures. In adherence to the Commission’s instructions, senior police officials made rounds to police stations statewide on Sunday, with the Kolkata Police Commissioner making a stop at Bhangar Police Station in the morning.
In a meeting with police staff, he urged all personnel to comply with the guidelines set forth by the Election Commission. Ajay Nand reiterated that any grievances related to booth jamming, vote rigging, or booth capturing would be taken seriously.
Later, during a press briefing, he communicated that the Kolkata Police is well-equipped to facilitate a smooth electoral process. “Checkpoints and search operations are actively being conducted in various regions, with coordinated patrolling alongside Central forces,” he stated.
Ajay Nand also disclosed that additional Central forces are anticipated to arrive prior to the elections. To evaluate police preparedness, DIG of Presidency Range Kankar Prasad Barui inspected three police stations in the southern suburbs on Sunday.
He performed on-site inspections at Narendrapur, Sonarpur, and Baruipur police stations, holding discussions with officials to assess security protocols in their respective jurisdictions.
These police stations fall within the Baruipur Police District of South 24 Parganas, and are in close proximity to Kolkata, encompassing several polling booths in rural territories. Officials provided insights on the security measures being implemented to ensure safety at these locations.
In a separate incident, Bhangar encountered unrest following a clash between ISF and Trinamool Congress workers over wall space designated for election campaigning. This confrontation involved physical violence, brick-throwing, and damage to motorcycles. Central forces were dispatched to restore order.
Reports indicate that ISF workers were attempting to paint wall graffiti in the Kulberia area of Bhangar Block II when they faced opposition from Trinamool members. A heated argument escalated into a physical altercation, resulting in injuries on both sides.
The ISF claimed that its members were attacked in the presence of law enforcement, alleging that bricks were thrown at their residences and motorcycles were damaged.
Conversely, the Trinamool Congress accused the ISF of initiating the conflict.
Upon receiving information, police from Polerhat Police Station, along with Central forces, promptly arrived at the scene to stabilize the situation.
