Kozhikode, Jan 21 (NationPress) A woman who posted a video accusing a man of sexual harassment during a bus journey—reportedly leading him to take his own life—has been apprehended by the police in Kerala's Kozhikode on Wednesday. Shimjitha Mustafa was arrested at a relative’s residence in Badagara after authorities filed charges against her for abetment of suicide.

Her arrest occurred while she was seeking anticipatory bail from the Kozhikode district court in relation to the suicide of U. Deepak, 42, who was discovered deceased in his bedroom days after her video alleging his misconduct on a private bus gained traction on social media.

Shimjitha released the video online without lodging a formal police report, a detail now being scrutinized in the ongoing investigation.

Following complaints from Deepak’s parents, the Medical College police initiated a case against Shimjitha.

Authorities indicated that she went into hiding after non-bailable sections were applied, and her phone had been turned off since the incident.

Subsequently, police issued a lookout notice to prevent her from leaving the country, suspecting she may have crossed into Mangaluru.

Given her previous residence abroad, authorities considered the chance of her fleeing the country plausible, which led to the issuance of the lookout notice. Meanwhile, investigators are examining CCTV footage from the private Al Ameen bus where the alleged incident took place.

The footage shows Deepak boarding the bus around 12:45 PM, appearing normal while carrying a bag.

It has also come to light that Shimjitha boarded the bus approximately one minute earlier than Deepak.

No signs of any conflict or disturbance were detected in the visuals.

Testimonies have been collected from the driver, conductor, and other staff members, all of whom denied any complaints or unusual events during the journey.

The conductor noted that Shimjitha did not make any allegations or seek assistance while on the bus.

Police have also taken statements from the bus personnel mentioned in the video.

Deepak’s family informed authorities that the dissemination of the video caused their son significant mental anguish and public disgrace due to what they claim were false accusations.

A men’s organization has approached the High Court, requesting a CBI or Crime Branch investigation into the suicide.

Authorities stated that further statements from additional passengers will be gathered, and Shimjitha’s digital devices will undergo forensic analysis.

Future legal actions will depend on the evidence collected.

Point of View

The events surrounding the Kozhikode suicide case highlight the urgent need for responsible social media use and the potential consequences of unverified allegations. While the pursuit of justice for victims of harassment is paramount, the legal system must also protect individuals from false accusations that can lead to devastating outcomes.
