Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, Jan 26 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Karnataka, Siddaramaiah, addressed the citizens on the occasion of the 77th Republic Day, stressing the vital need to protect the Constitution, bolster democracy, and guarantee social and economic justice. He also showcased the state government’s guarantee schemes that aim to foster equality and well-being.
In extending his Republic Day wishes to the people of Karnataka, the Chief Minister reiterated that the Constitution ensures social, economic, and political justice, along with liberty of thought and expression, equality of status and opportunity, and fraternity among citizens.
He reflected on Karnataka’s historical role in promoting democratic values, noting that the seeds of people’s rule were planted nearly 800 years ago during the Sharana movement led by the social reformer Basavanna. The Anubhava Mantapa at Kudala Sangama was highlighted as an early example of democracy where individuals from diverse backgrounds engaged equally in discussions.
The Chief Minister pointed out that prior to the Constitution drafted by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, India adhered to an unwritten social order that perpetuated inequality based on caste and gender. He emphasized that Dr. Ambedkar dismantled this system, presenting the nation with a Constitution grounded in equality, dignity, and justice.
Stressing that political democracy must be complemented by economic democracy, as envisioned by Dr. Ambedkar, the Chief Minister asserted that a robust nation can only be established by ensuring social justice and economic equality. He reiterated that development must benefit everyone, regardless of their social background, and that a person’s status should be determined by merit and accomplishments, rather than birth.
The Chief Minister mentioned that the Constitution guides all policies and programs of the state government, reinforcing their commitment to its principles. He outlined the constitutional obligation of the elected government to eradicate poverty, ill health, illiteracy, and malnutrition, and to foster a society that is free from hunger and fear.
He elaborated on the government’s guarantee schemes, which align with the Directive Principles of State Policy. The Anna Bhagya scheme ensures food security, Gruha Jyothi provides energy security, Gruha Lakshmi offers monthly financial support to women heads of economically disadvantaged families, Shakti guarantees free travel for women, and Yuvanidhi provides unemployment allowances to graduates.
The Chief Minister noted that economically weaker families in Karnataka are saving between Rs 5,000 and Rs 6,000 monthly due to these schemes, while middle and upper-middle-class families save up to Rs 30,000 annually. He stated that these initiatives have fostered a sense of security in society, allowing families to invest more in education, healthcare, and future savings.
Cautioning against attempts to undermine the Constitution, the Chief Minister denounced forces that challenge social justice and change. He called for citizens to remain vigilant against efforts to weaken constitutional institutions.
“If we protect the Constitution, it will protect us,” he urged, encouraging the public to pledge on Republic Day to uphold constitutional values.
In conclusion, the Chief Minister stated that while many schemes have been implemented, their primary goal remains the establishment of an egalitarian society with equal opportunities and dignity for all. He sought the cooperation and support of the populace in building a strong and empowered Karnataka.
