Bengaluru, Dec 4 (NationPress) The comments made by Karnataka Upalokayukta Justice B. Veerappa regarding the extensive corruption in the state have ignited a significant controversy on Thursday, placing the Congress government led by Siddaramaiah in a difficult position.
Justice Veerappa's assertion that corruption in Karnataka is at a staggering 63 percent has put the state government on the back foot, as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has vehemently criticized both Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, demanding their resignation following this revelation.
During a book launch event, Justice Veerappa noted that while Kerala currently faces around 10 percent corruption, Karnataka is burdened with 63 percent. He shared, “I am witnessing this firsthand since taking office as Upalokayukta.”
He further elaborated, “Corruption is pervasive across all departments in Karnataka. The state ranks fifth in terms of corruption. If this issue is not urgently tackled, it poses a significant threat to our future.”
His statements were delivered on Wednesday at the launch of the book “Overseas Travelogue” by advocate Tulavanuru Shankarappa at the High Court Advocates Auditorium, drawing considerable attention.
In response to Justice Veerappa’s remarks, Leader of the Opposition and senior BJP figure R. Ashoka criticized the government on Thursday.
He stated, “The Congress party, which ascended to power by making unfounded allegations regarding a supposed 40 percent commission during the BJP administration, is now mired in its own commission-related scandals.”
Ashoka further remarked, “Hon’ble Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, corruption is rampant in every department under your administration. With a corruption rate of 63 percent — a statement made by none other than the Hon’ble Upalokayukta regarding your own government — what will your response be? Will you take moral responsibility and resign, or will you persist in this disgraceful conduct?”
He added that the Congress, which secured 136 seats through deceit and conspiracy, would be lucky to win 36 seats if fresh elections were called.
“This is my guarantee,” Ashoka asserted.
The Congress party had made allegations of corruption and the supposed 40 percent commission under the previous Basavaraj Bommai-led BJP government a focal point of their election campaign, a theme echoed by Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra at numerous public gatherings.
Justice Veerappa is widely respected for implementing various reforms within the system. As the executive chairman of the Karnataka State Legal Services Authority, he played an instrumental role in initiating and subsequently extending a 50 percent rebate on outstanding traffic fines in the state. This initiative aimed to enhance citizens' access to justice and alleviate the backlog of cases, resulting in significant revenue generation and the resolution of numerous pending cases.
