Imphal, Feb 18 (NationPress) The Kuki-Zo Council (KZC), the leading organization representing the Kuki-Zo tribes in Manipur, has decided to cancel the mass rally planned for Tuesday following a request from the Central government.

Initially, the KZC had intended to hold a significant rally on Tuesday, advocating for an immediate political resolution to the ongoing ethnic crisis and calling for the establishment of a separate administration or Union Territory with a legislature for the Kuki-Zo tribes within Manipur.

The rally was set to take place across six districts in Manipur – Pherzawl, Tengnoupal, Jiribam, Kangpokpi, Churachandpur, and Chandel - where the Kuki-Zo community is predominant.

In a joint statement, KZC Chairman Henlianthang Thanglet and General Secretary (Administration) Rev. V.L. Nghakthang indicated that the Centre urged the KZC to cancel the rally scheduled in all Kuki-Zo populated districts.

The KZC convened an emergency meeting to seriously consider the government’s request, leading to the decision to cancel the rally.

“The Council appeals to all members to understand the decision made to call off the peaceful political rally, which is in the interest of our future political efforts,” the statement from KZC clarified.

The KZC had previously supported the implementation of President’s Rule in Manipur, believing it would facilitate necessary political solutions.

A coalition of the Indigenous Tribal Leaders' Forum (ITLF), Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM), and other Kuki-Zo tribal organizations expressed the KZC's positive stance regarding the government's announcement of President's Rule in the state.

“We are optimistic that President’s Rule will lead to essential political resolutions and foster peaceful coexistence between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo-Hmar tribes as good neighbors,” stated KZC Secretary (Information) Khaikhohauh Gangte.

Following the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on February 9, extensive discussions have been ongoing to select a new leader for the ruling BJP legislature party.

Since then, Sambit Patra, the BJP’s northeast-in-charge, has conducted multiple meetings with Ministers, MLAs, and leaders of the BJP and its allies to gather their opinions. With no consensus on a new Chief Minister, the Governor advised the President to impose President’s Rule in the state, placing the Assembly under suspended animation, allowing for its revival at a future date as deemed appropriate by the President.
