Srinagar, April 23 (NationPress) A fierce gunfight has commenced between security forces and terrorists in the Kulgam district of J&K on Wednesday, following the elimination of two terrorists earlier in the day during an infiltration attempt on the Line of Control (LoC) in the Uri sector of Baramulla district.
According to officials, security forces cordoned off the Tangmarg area in Kulgam after receiving intelligence reports about the terrorists' location.
As the forces advanced towards the hiding terrorists, the militants opened fire, initiating an ongoing encounter. Additional reinforcements have been deployed to the scene to prevent any escape by the terrorists, as stated by an official.
Earlier, the Army's Chinar Corps, based in Srinagar, announced on X that "approximately 2-3 terrorists attempted to infiltrate through the general area of Sarjeevan at Uri Nala, Baramulla". Alert troops on the LoC confronted and intercepted them, resulting in a firefight.
This encounter in Kulgam and the infiltration bid in Baramulla occurred just a day after Pakistan-sponsored terrorists killed 26 innocent civilians in a meadow near Pahalgam in Anantnag district.
The victims included a navy officer who had just married on April 16 and an IB officer.
Eyewitness accounts reveal that a local resident named Adil engaged the terrorists in a bid to protect the tourists, attempting to disarm one before he was fatally shot.
A significant anti-terror operation is underway in the Baisaran meadow, the site of the tourist massacre, utilizing drones, helicopters, and other advanced technology to locate and eliminate the terrorists.
Security forces have also circulated sketches of the suspects involved in the atrocity.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited the Baisaran meadow to assess the operation aimed at apprehending the terrorists. His presence at the site signified a strong message of national resolve to seek justice for the innocent victims.
During his visit, Amit Shah met with the families of the deceased tourists and those injured in the attack, assuring them that the bloodshed would not go unpunished, and that both the terrorists and those who orchestrated the attack would face severe consequences.
He subsequently returned to New Delhi to brief Prime Minister Narendra Modi and participate in a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security chaired by the Prime Minister.
