Kolkata, Sep 15 (NationPress) - Kunal Ghosh, the state general secretary of the Trinamool Congress, has directed a pointed remark at the Enforcement Directorate (ED) after the agency summoned Bengali actress and former TMC MP Mimi Chakraborty as part of its investigation into an illegal betting application.
Through his social media platform, Ghosh jested that the central investigative body is inadvertently assisting Chakraborty in marketing her forthcoming film 'Raktabeej 2' by issuing the summons.
He stated, "ED notice to Mimi. The law will take its own course. I cannot comment on the notice. Nonetheless, I extend my gratitude to the central investigation agency on behalf of the Bengali film audience for their role in promoting the film Raktabeej 2. Shibu (Shiboprosad Mukherjee) has engaged various event management firms for the movie's promotion. I'm unsure about the strategy behind this. Once the film becomes a blockbuster, Mimi will surely express her thanks to them."
This cryptic message from the Trinamool spokesperson came shortly after the ED issued a notice to Chakraborty, requiring her presence in Delhi for questioning related to the promotion of an illegal betting app.
Raktabeej 2, featuring Chakraborty, is an upcoming Bengali political action thriller directed by Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukherjee, set to premiere on September 26 during the Durga Puja celebrations.
Last month, fellow Bengali actor Ankush Hazra was also summoned by the ED regarding the same matter.
The central investigation agency has previously interrogated various actors and cricketers in relation to this case.
The ED is scrutinizing several instances involving illegal betting applications, which are suspected of defrauding numerous individuals and investors out of crores of rupees, as well as avoiding significant tax payments. In this investigation, the ED is expected to inquire about Chakraborty’s alleged ties with an online betting platform accused of money laundering and tax evasion.
Just last week, the ED interrogated former Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan for about eight hours regarding the same investigation. Another ex-cricketer, Suresh Raina, was also questioned by the agency last month.
According to sources, the ED is searching for connections between celebrities and the betting applications, including any endorsement fees received and communication methods.
