Did Bengali Actor and Former Trinamool MP Mimi Chakraborty Face Harassment at an Event?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 26 (NationPress) - On Monday, Bengali actress and ex-Trinamool Congress MP Mimi Chakraborty lodged a police complaint against the organisers of a cultural event, claiming she experienced public harassment during a performance in Bongaon, located in North 24 Parganas district on Sunday night.
Chakraborty reportedly sent her complaint to the Bongaon Police Station via email.
During her performance at an event in the Nayagram area of Bongaon, the actress asserted that she was subjected to severe harassment and was ordered to leave the stage. This event was coordinated by the Nayagopalganj Yubak Sangha Club.
She specifically mentioned Tanmay Shastri, an official of the club, in her complaint.
According to Chakraborty, a man abruptly ascended the stage during her act and interrupted her singing. She accused him of instructing her to exit the stage in a demeaning fashion.
Labeling the incident as both humiliating and inappropriate, she expressed her frustration on social media, stating that such actions were deeply disrespectful towards her as a performer.
“This is the first time I have encountered this type of conduct. It appears people now consider stage performers as their ‘property.’ A man named Tanay Shastri abruptly commanded me to cease my performance, saying, ‘You leave!’ I was so surprised that I initially didn’t realize he was addressing me,” she expressed.
After processing the incident, Chakraborty recounted feeling shocked and confused. She mentioned that the man reiterated his demand, prompting her to wish the audience a good night before exiting the stage without further conflict.
In contrast, the event organisers dismissed her allegations as unfounded and false.
According to the club's representatives, Chakraborty was supposed to arrive by 10:30 p.m. but showed up at approximately 11:45 p.m., nearly an hour and a half late. They claimed she was treated with proper respect and escorted onto the stage.
The organisers asserted that her social media remarks not only insulted their organization but also the entire local community and the town of Bongaon.
Tanay Shastri stated, “Mimi Chakraborty was not subjected to any form of disrespect. Her social media post is an affront to our area and Bongaon as a whole. We uphold discipline in our community and will not compromise on it. We secured police consent for the event until midnight, hence her instruction to leave the stage was legitimate. There was no disruption; we simply adhered to the guidelines.”
Police officials confirmed that they have acknowledged the complaint and are currently investigating the situation.
