Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 21 (NationPress) Event organiser Tanay Shastri has officially filed a police complaint against Bengali actress and former Trinamool Congress MP Mimi Chakraborty, marking an escalation in a legal dispute that started with a Rs 20 lakh defamation notice.
Shastri, who was recently held in judicial custody for 14 days due to a harassment claim from the actress, is now demanding a public apology and the reimbursement of a Rs 2.65 lakh performance fee. He asserts that Chakraborty’s “false” claims have severely damaged his reputation.
The complaint was registered at the Bangaon Police Station in the North 24 Parganas district, just two days after Shastri sent her the defamation notice.
In a statement to local media, Shastri remarked, “Mimi Chakraborty came to perform at our club and accepted a fee of Rs 2.65 lakh. I have requested that this amount be returned as she failed to arrive on time. Her complaint has tarnished my reputation. I expect her to publicly apologise. Hence, I lodged a formal complaint at the Bangaon police station.”
He further added, “We did not show any disrespect towards Mimi Chakraborty on stage. I was unjustly imprisoned for 14 days due to her false allegations. I seek justice from both the court and the government.”
On Thursday, Shastri indicated that a legal notice had been dispatched to Chakraborty, demanding Rs 20 lakh as compensation or face legal consequences. So far, Chakraborty has refrained from issuing any formal statement regarding the latest developments.
Shastri told the press, “She has defamed me without justification. For this, I have claimed Rs 20 lakh from the actress. If she does not apologise or remit the money, I will file the defamation case in court within the next few days. This is merely the beginning, and I intend to see it through.”
Last month, Chakraborty attended an event organised by Shastri in Bongaon, where she was scheduled to be the final performer. She alleged that Shastri removed her from the stage midway through her performance, citing that it was past midnight and he lacked permission to extend the event.
In response, Shastri filed a counter-complaint, arguing that Chakraborty did not arrive at the agreed time and claims he merely asked her to vacate the stage, denying any harassment.
The police subsequently visited his home for inquiries, during which Shastri allegedly obstructed the officers. He and two of his associates were arrested on charges of harassment and hindering police duty, leading to a case being registered under a non-bailable section. After spending over a week in judicial custody, he was released on bail on February 11.
With Shastri now pursuing a defamation lawsuit against Chakraborty, this dispute looks set to enter a new chapter legally.
