Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on 15 August 2025 hoisted the National Flag at Lok Niwas on the occasion of India's 80th Independence Day, calling on citizens, resident welfare associations, youth icons, and students to collectively build a 'Viksit Delhi' — a national model of excellence, safety, and civic pride.

Key Priorities Laid Out

Addressing an audience that included freedom fighters and student representatives as a ceremonial police contingent presented the National Salute, L-G Sandhu identified the national capital's most pressing challenges. These included the cleaning of the Yamuna, tackling air pollution, ensuring housing for all, expanding affordable healthcare, and strengthening safety and security — particularly for women and children.

He also flagged traffic management and the rejuvenation of Delhi's heritage as priorities requiring urgent, coordinated action.

Governance Rooted in PM Modi's Vision

L-G Sandhu said Delhi's approach to public governance must be anchored in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's guiding principle of 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, aur Sabka Prayas'. He also invoked Modi's 'Shakti Ki Saptadhara' framework, enunciated earlier that morning from the Red Fort, which spans seven pillars: manufacturing, agriculture and food processing, technology and innovation, Gati Shakti, Raksha Shakti, the green and blue economy, and India's soft power.

The L-G said these seven streams would together power India's growth story in the years ahead, and that Delhi must position itself at the vanguard of this national journey.

Call for Multi-Level Coordination

Sandhu underlined the need for seamless coordination between the Union government, the Delhi government, municipal bodies, neighbouring states, and citizens to convert complex urban challenges into enduring opportunities. He described every district, street, and neighbourhood of Delhi as carrying its own story and immense potential — potential that the administration bears collective responsibility to translate into convenience, dignity, and well-being for every resident.

L-G's Message on X

In a post on social media platform X, the L-G wrote: 'Paid homage to our freedom fighters and remembered their supreme sacrifices, which continue to inspire generations. As we honour their legacy; we must renew our resolve, guided by the vision of PM @narendramodi Ji of Saptdhara and #SabkaSaath, #SabkaVikas, #SabkaVishwas and #SabkaPrayas.'

In a separate post, he added: 'Delhi needs to lead the nation's journey towards an #AatmanirbharBharat and a #ViksitBharat@2047. Delhi has been an inseparable part of my life's journey and I remain committed to its progress! To the youth — the real drivers of our future — I say: let us build a Delhi where every citizen feels safe, valued and empowered.'

With Independence Day setting the political tone, all eyes will now be on whether the multi-agency coordination Sandhu called for translates into measurable action on the Yamuna, air quality, and housing in the months ahead.
