Is There a Controversy Over Land Allotments in Vizag?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Amaravati, Feb 12 (NationPress) The allegations made by the YSR Congress Party regarding irregularities in land allocations to businesses in Visakhapatnam ignited a lively debate in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council on Thursday, resulting in a walkout by the principal opposition party.
Leader of Opposition Botsa Satyanarayana orchestrated the walkout following intense exchanges between the main opposition and the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), which is currently leading the coalition government.
Members of the YSRCP alleged that the government was assigning lands to real estate developers under the guise of IT companies.
Minister for Information Technology Nara Lokesh refuted the opposition's allegations and clarified that only five reputable companies were granted land leases at a nominal cost of 99 paise.
He criticized the YSRCP for making broad allegations and then exiting the House without providing evidence.
The debate commenced during the question hour when YSRCP MLC T. Madhava Rao inquired about the number of companies that received land for 99 paise over the past 20 months. He called on the government to furnish all relevant details pertaining to the land allotments.
Madhava Rao claimed that companies established last year were also awarded land for 99 paise. He further asserted that the government allocated land valued at Rs 600 crore in Vijayawada to a company investing only Rs 156 crore.
He also alleged that a real estate firm was allotted land worth Rs 3,000 crore for 99 paise and mentioned that an educational institution has encroached upon land valued at Rs 5,000 crore.
In response to Lokesh's assertion that the government is striving to establish an IT ecosystem in Visakhapatnam, Satyanarayana remarked that such an ecosystem was already in place since 2006.
The YSRCP leader accused the government of secretly negotiating land allotments with specific companies.
Lokesh contended that the state has garnered substantial investments over the past 18 months owing to the government's policies.
He emphasized that the lands were allocated to companies with the goal of creating jobs, reaffirming the government’s commitment to generating 20 lakh jobs within five years.
Lokesh highlighted that the government is establishing 22 clusters throughout the state.
He mentioned that Arcelor Mittal was granted land for its upcoming project in north Andhra. "Is it wrong to allocate lands to companies like TCS and Cognizant?" he queried.
Last year, the state cabinet sanctioned the allocation of 21.16 acres to TCS in Visakhapatnam at a symbolic lease price of 99 paise.
Lokesh accused the YSRCP of attempting to obstruct investments in the state. "You aim to deter investors, but the government will not permit this to happen," he declared.
The minister questioned whether any companies had entered Visakhapatnam during the five-year tenure of the YSRCP.
