New Delhi, Jan 14 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to unveil ‘Mission Mausam’ today, which is designed to transform India into a weather-ready and climate-smart nation, coinciding with the 150th Foundation Day of the India Meteorological Department.

The festivities are taking place at Bharat Mandapam, where the Prime Minister will also deliver a speech to attendees.

This initiative aims to equip India with advanced weather surveillance technologies and systems to prepare for climate challenges.

Mission Mausam will employ sophisticated atmospheric observation techniques, including next-generation radars, satellites, and high-performance computing.

The mission will enhance the comprehension of weather and climate dynamics, generating air quality data to aid in long-term weather management strategies.

Additionally, the Prime Minister will unveil the IMD Vision-2047 document, which outlines strategies for weather resilience and adapting to climate change, detailing approaches for forecasting, management, and mitigation of climate issues.

The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Modi, approved the Mausam Mission in September 2024. This initiative is aimed at advancing India’s scientific research and services related to weather and climate, empowering stakeholders, including citizens and grassroots users, to effectively respond to extreme weather conditions and the ramifications of climate change.

This ambitious initiative, which has a budget of Rs 2,000 crore over two years, will primarily be executed by the India Meteorological Department, the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, and the National Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting.

Mission Mausam is expected to provide significant advantages across various sectors, including agriculture, disaster management, defense, environment, aviation, water resources, power, tourism, shipping, transport, energy, and health. This initiative will also enhance data-driven decision-making in fields such as urban planning, transportation (road and rail), offshore operations, and environmental monitoring.

In honor of the IMD's 150th Foundation Day, a variety of events, activities, and workshops have been organized to highlight the achievements of the IMD over the past century and a half, its contributions towards making India climate-resilient, and the significant role of governmental institutions in delivering essential weather and climate services.
