New Delhi, Jan 15 (NationPress) A high-powered enquiry committee established to probe the activities of organized crime syndicates, terrorist factions, and drug traffickers undermining the security interests of both India and the US, has delivered its findings to the Government, proposing legal measures against an individual, as detailed by the Ministry of Home Affairs on Wednesday.

The committee was formed in November 2023 following information from US authorities regarding a "foiled plot" to assassinate Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a Khalistani separatist on US territory.

The ministry indicated that the enquiry committee undertook independent investigations while also following leads from the US side, receiving full cooperation from US officials, who engaged in reciprocal visits.

According to a statement from the ministry on Wednesday, "The committee further interrogated numerous officials from various agencies and meticulously examined pertinent documents related to this issue. After extensive investigations, the committee has submitted its findings to the Government, recommending legal action against an individual whose previous criminal affiliations surfaced during the enquiry."

The statement continued, "The enquiry committee has advised that the proposed legal actions should be expedited. Additionally, they have suggested enhancements to existing systems and procedures, alongside measures to bolster India’s response capabilities, ensuring systematic controls and coordinated actions in similar situations."

IANS reported in October 2024 on the visit of an Indian committee to Washington, where they met with US counterparts to discuss the findings. At that time, US officials noted that the presence of the team in Washington, DC, underscored the seriousness with which New Delhi was addressing the matter.

John Kirby, a spokesperson for the US National Security Council, remarked during a press briefing, "The fact that they dispatched an inquiry committee here signifies their commitment to addressing this issue seriously."

Miller also commented that the investigation does not adversely affect the overall relations between the two nations. He stated, "India remains an incredibly strong partner of the US. We collaborate on numerous issues, including our shared vision for a free, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific. When concerns arise, we maintain a relationship that allows us to address those concerns candidly."
