Kollam, April 28 (NationPress) A court in Kollam, Kerala sentenced Chandulal, the husband, and his mother Geethalal to life imprisonment for their shocking involvement in the 2019 dowry death case of Tushara, who was effectively starved to death.
Tushara's mother expressed relief at the verdict, stating that her daughter endured immense suffering.
“The harassment related to dowry began just three months after the marriage. My daughter faced severe hardships, yet she remained in that situation. Whenever she called us, she implored us to bring more money, insisting we should not visit her,” she recounted.
The case gained attention when Tushara was found dead in March 2019, brought to a local hospital.
Her family was horrified to discover that she weighed only 21 kg, reduced to mere skin and bones.
Subsequent investigations revealed that Tushara had been subjected to prolonged torture, denied food and water for days while confined by her husband and mother-in-law.
They persistently demanded additional dowry, and Tushara was even barred from seeing her two young daughters.
Chandulal and Geethalal also isolated Tushara's parents, preventing any contact.
The prosecution labeled this incident as an unprecedented case within the country.
“The post-mortem indicated that her stomach was devoid of any food, and her urinary bladder was completely empty,” stated the prosecution, emphasizing the rarity of such a case.
“When her daughter enrolled in school, the mother was listed as Geethalal. It was only after Tushara's tragic death that the teacher learned her real name,” added the counsel.
The investigating officer noted that the inquiry was smooth, thanks to the cooperation of all witnesses involved.
