Mumbai stabbing: Radicalised man held for knifing 2 guards after Kalma test
A 31-year-old man has been arrested in Mumbai's Naya Nagar area for allegedly stabbing two security guards after asking them to recite the Kalma — a key Islamic declaration of faith — in what investigators are probing as a possible lone wolf attack. The incident took place in the early hours of Monday, 28 April, at around 4 am IST, near Wockhardt Hospital.
What Happened
The accused, identified as Zaib Zuber Ansari, allegedly approached two guards stationed at an under-construction building near Wockhardt Hospital. According to police officials, Ansari reportedly questioned the guards about their religious identity before attacking them with a knife. The two victims, Rajkumar Mishra and Subroto Sen, sustained serious injuries and were admitted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Mishra managed to reach the hospital on his own despite his injuries, while Sen was assisted by a local resident, Nayab Sheikh, who was returning home from work. Sheikh noticed Sen injured and hiding in the guard booth, took him first to the police station, and then ensured he received medical attention.
Swift Arrest and Legal Proceedings
Police acted quickly after the attack, reviewing CCTV footage from the surrounding area to identify the suspect. Ansari was apprehended within approximately 90 minutes of the incident and brought to Naya Nagar Police Station, where a case was registered against him under sections related to attempted murder and promoting enmity between communities. He was subsequently produced before a court in Thane, which remanded him to police custody until 4 May.
