Karnataka CM Urges Central Government to Resolve LPG Supply Crisis in Bengaluru
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, March 10 (NationPress) Karnataka's Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has urgently reached out to Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri regarding the alarming disruptions in the supply of commercial LPG cylinders within Bengaluru. In his correspondence, he emphasized that the apparent shortage followed a recent directive from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas that prioritized LPG production for domestic use, effectively sidelining commercial needs.
While acknowledging the positive intent behind the policy aimed at ensuring a steady LPG supply for households, Siddaramaiah pointed out that its execution has inadvertently led to a significant scarcity of commercial LPG in the city.
He highlighted that numerous hotel and restaurant associations have reported challenges in acquiring commercial LPG cylinders, warning that some businesses may have to temporarily cease operations if the supply issues are not rectified promptly.
The Chief Minister remarked, "Bengaluru is home to a vast network of small eateries, mess facilities, and catering services that cater to thousands of individuals daily." In discussions with Oil Marketing Companies, he learned that three major firms—Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL)—have traditionally supported the state’s demand for commercial LPG.
Typically, IOCL provides approximately 500 to 550 metric tonnes per day, HPCL contributes around 300 metric tonnes, and BPCL supplies about 230 metric tonnes. The abrupt disruption in this supply chain is severely impacting hotels, catering services, and other commercial entities in the area.
Siddaramaiah cautioned that any prolonged disruption could directly impact daily life within the city. He further noted the consequences for a significant number of students and working professionals who rely on hotels and mess facilities for their meals.
Moreover, wedding halls, hostels, and event venues depending on commercial LPG for food preparation are also facing uncertainty, especially with various social events already scheduled.
Given the critical role of commercial LPG in a metropolitan area like Bengaluru, the Chief Minister urged the Union Minister to intervene and ensure a reliable supply to hotels, restaurants, choultries, community halls, and other businesses. He also requested direction to the Oil Marketing Companies to alleviate the current supply challenges.
"A swift resolution is crucial to ensure the seamless operation of businesses and to prevent inconvenience for the thousands who depend on these services daily," Siddaramaiah stated while urging the Union government to act swiftly.
