A 17-year-old boy was hacked to death by a five-member gang near the vehicle parking area adjoining the Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai in the early hours of Monday, 25 May, triggering alarm over rising violent crime among youth in the temple city. All five accused have since been arrested, police confirmed.

How the Attack Unfolded

According to investigators, the victim had been sleeping at the Madurai Corporation-owned parking facility near the temple premises when the gang allegedly entered the area armed with sickles and other sharp-edged weapons. The assault reportedly took place around dawn when the teenager was alone and vulnerable.

Police sources said the assailants surrounded the boy and launched a sudden, repeated attack with the weapons. The victim sustained severe injuries and died at the scene before bystanders could intervene. Local residents and passersby alerted police, who rushed to secure the area. The body was subsequently recovered and sent for post-mortem examination at a government hospital.

Arrests and the Accused

Senior police officials immediately constituted special teams to trace the perpetrators. Acting on initial evidence and local intelligence, investigators swiftly identified and arrested all five suspects allegedly involved in the killing. One of the accused has been identified as Muthumani. The remaining four have not been named publicly at this stage.

Chithirai Festival Clash as Trigger

Preliminary investigations suggest the murder was rooted in a long-standing rivalry. According to investigators, the victim and Muthumani had previously clashed during the Chithirai festival celebrations — one of Madurai's largest and most prominent annual religious events. Police suspect that dispute escalated into a premeditated revenge attack.

Notably, officials also stated that the deceased reportedly had multiple criminal cases registered against him, and investigators are examining whether additional gang rivalries or disputes may have contributed to the motive. This comes amid broader concerns about youth gang violence in Tamil Nadu's temple towns, where festival gatherings have periodically been flashpoints for inter-group conflict.

Ongoing Investigation and Security Measures

Police said the investigation remains active, with teams working to establish the complete sequence of events and determine whether additional individuals were involved in planning or facilitating the attack. Security has been intensified around the Meenakshi Amman Temple precinct following the incident.

Authorities are expected to file a chargesheet once the post-mortem report and forensic findings are available, with the case likely to be heard in a fast-track court given the victim's age.
