Amravati, Jan 7 (NationPress) The Maharashtra Congress President, Harshwardhan Sapkal, expressed his outrage on Wednesday following the tragic murder of party leader Hidayat Patel in Akola. He highlighted this incident as a stark illustration of the alarming decline in law and order within the state.
He emphasized that criminal gangs, including those involved in drug trafficking, sand and land mafias, have proliferated in Maharashtra due to the absence of a dedicated Home Minister.
Sapkal called for the immediate arrest and severe punishment of all individuals implicated in this brutal attack.
During a press briefing in Amravati, he remarked that the upcoming elections for the Amravati Municipal Corporation mirror the corruption seen in the other 29 municipal elections across the state. He asserted that the ruling party is resorting to financial inducements to manipulate electoral outcomes.
“The situation of law and order is dire; the Election Commission has become a mere tool for the ruling party, with the administration colluding with those in power. There are rampant instances of fraudulent voting and widespread monetary distribution. The administration in the state is virtually non-existent. The issues witnessed in municipal elections are now manifesting in municipal corporation elections as well,” he stated.
The Congress leader pointed out that horse-trading is on the rise, with opposition candidates facing intimidation and coercion to withdraw their nominations.
“To secure uncontested elections, both the Chief Minister and his Deputy Ministers have resorted to hooliganism,” claimed Sapkal.
He also criticized the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, stating that while he is supposed to uphold the Constitution and the integrity of the House, he was seen outside the election officer's office ensuring the unopposed election of three family members, threatening officials in the process. His behavior was described as bizarre and unacceptable.
“The ruling party has effectively dismantled democracy,” he asserted.
Sapkal further claimed that the Bharatiya Janata Party and AIMIM are essentially two sides of the same coin.
“Former Chief Minister and BJP leader Ashok Chavan is advocating for AIMIM candidates. AIMIM serves as the BJP’s B-team,” he concluded.
