Mumbai, July 9 (NationPress) Maharashtra's Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule informed the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday that a comprehensive inquiry will be initiated regarding the illicit transfer of tribal lands to non-tribals within the state, with a detailed report expected in three months.
Responding to a calling attention motion raised by MLA Rajendra Gavit concerning the transfer of tribal lands, Minister Bawankule stated, "According to the law established in 1974, tribal lands are under protection. However, if any lands were wrongfully acquired by non-tribals from 1974 to 2004, complaints can be filed with the government until 2034."
The Minister revealed that approximately 617 lands were improperly transferred between 2021 and 2023. Out of these, 404 lands have been restored, while 213 cases remain pending with District Collectors. The government will soon provide the relevant list to all MLAs.
Bawankule elaborated that MLAs have reported 1628 cases from various revenue divisions across the state, including 732 cases from Konkan. All reported cases will be investigated by the Divisional Commissioners, and a report will be presented before the next Assembly session.
He clarified that only agricultural land can be transferred to tribal individuals. For land designated for commercial, industrial, or residential purposes, permission is granted only after verifying 34 specific conditions. He emphasized that these matters are being thoroughly examined.
Bawankule urged all MLAs from tribal regions and the Tribal Development Minister to collaborate on this initiative. “If there are additional complaints, they should be forwarded to the government for investigation,” he assured.
