Mumbai, March 17 (NationPress) In response to the growing calls for the demolition of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb’s grave located in Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra's Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated on Monday that it is regrettable that the state government must safeguard it.

Nonetheless, he declared that the government will not permit the "Mahima Mandan" (glorification) of Aurangzeb's legacy.

Fadnavis made these remarks near Bhiwandi during the inauguration of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj temple.

The Chief Minister emphasized, “If any glorification occurs, it will solely be for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and not for Aurangzeb's tomb. The ASI has safeguarded Aurangzeb's tomb for the last 50 years, making it necessary for the Maharashtra government to continue its protection. However, Aurangzeb's legacy will never receive glorification in Maharashtra. I assure you.”

He reiterated his commitment to prevent any exaltation of Aurangzeb's legacy in Maharashtra, stating that any attempts to do so would be thwarted. “Chhatrapati Shivaji united individuals from 18 Pagar castes, farmers, and Balutedars, instilling strength in them. He prepared us to defend the cause of God, country, and religion. This is why Sambhaji Maharaj, Rajaram Maharaj, and Tara Rani later contributed to Swarajya. Following Shivaji's reign, the Marathas buried Aurangzeb here, overcame the Mughals, and raised the saffron flag over Delhi. Thus, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj envisioned a Maharashtra that thrives in unity, not one fragmented by caste,” he asserted.

Fadnavis also mentioned, “There are 12 forts associated with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, and we are working towards their recognition as world heritage sites. PM Modi has made efforts in this regard, and the process is currently in motion.” He expressed optimism that the world heritage status will be granted soon.

The Chief Minister revealed plans to establish a Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj memorial in Sangameshwar, where he was captured in the Konkan region. “Moreover, the government is constructing a significant memorial at Tulapur. We have also requested the Uttar Pradesh government to build a memorial in Agra, and funds have been allocated for this initiative. Additionally, plans are underway for a memorial at Panipat,” he added.

Previously, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal organized protests across the state advocating for the demolition of Aurangzeb’s tomb.

Meanwhile, NCP (SP) legislator Jitendra Awhad contended that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj became a hero due to the existence of a villain like Aurangzeb.
