Nagpur Dec 9 (NationPress) Opposition factions within the Maharashtra Assembly raised serious concerns on Tuesday regarding the police encounter of government consultant Rohit Arya, who had taken over 20 children hostage, alleging that the state government owed him payments.
The Opposition described the encounter as “unjust”.
“Arya had contributed to the 'Swachhata Monitor' (Cleanliness Monitor) and 'Mukhyamantri Mazi Shala Sundar Shala' (Chief Minister My Beautiful School) initiatives during the MahaYuti administration. The government had delayed his payments. In a video, he stated, 'Give me my money, I am not a terrorist.' So, why was Rohit Arya confronted in such a manner? Why was he not shot in the leg? How was an encounter specialist available at that moment?” questioned Congress Legislative Party leader Vijay Wadettiwar, who raised a calling attention motion on the matter in the state Assembly.
Wadettiwar asserted that the incident arose due to the previous Ministers' failure to settle his payments.
“Was an investigation conducted into the actions of former Ministers regarding this issue? Is the money still owed by the Maharashtra government?” he inquired.
Minister of State (MoS) for Home (Rural), Pankaj Bhoyar, responded by stating that an inquiry is currently in progress.
“The police acted in self-defense as Rohit Arya had taken small children hostage. There is nothing improper about the police's actions. The Human Rights Commission has mandated the formation of a committee and investigation, which is now underway,” asserted MoS Bhoyar.
The Minister guaranteed that appropriate measures would be taken against those involved.
Opposition MLAs Nana Patole and Jayant Patil accused the Maharashtra government of depleting the state Treasury to the point where it cannot pay consultants like Arya.
“What Rohit Arya did is indefensible, but shouldn't the government be held accountable? If it fails to compensate consultants, that indicates the government is experiencing financial difficulties,” stated Congress MLA Patole.
NCP-SP MLA Jayant Patil questioned whether the state government had lodged police complaints against Arya for unlawfully soliciting money from schools instead of issuing reminders.
Minister Bhoyar clarified that Arya had operated the 'Swachhata Monitor' project twice under corporate social responsibility, receiving Rs 9.90 lakh.
“He misinterpreted that he would receive a third project and began collecting money from schools without government approval. The government has demanded he return the funds,” the Minister added.
