Mumbai, July 31 (NationPress) The President of Maharashtra Congress, Harshwardhan Sapkal, stated on Thursday that the court has exonerated all individuals implicated in the 2008 Malegaon blast case. However, the question of who orchestrated the bombing remains unresolved.

According to Sapkal, the government’s stance should unequivocally oppose terrorism. He argued that if the Maharashtra government intends to appeal to the Supreme Court regarding the 2006 Mumbai train blasts, it should similarly pursue action in the Malegaon case.

“The Congress party has consistently maintained a strong position against terrorism. The sacrifices made by Mahatma Gandhi, Indira Gandhi, and Rajiv Gandhi illustrate our commitment to this cause. Terrorism knows no religion or color, and it is imperative that terrorists face the consequences of their actions,” the State Congress President emphasized.

He questioned whether the state government, which has opted to challenge the Supreme Court’s ruling on the Mumbai railway blasts, will also take similar steps regarding the Malegaon verdict.

“The 2008 Malegaon blast resulted in the deaths of six individuals and over a hundred injuries. This is an undeniable fact. The then Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, Home Minister R.R. Patil, and Investigating Officer Hemant Karkare diligently pursued this case, and we honor their efforts today. It is also pertinent to recall the comments made by Special Public Prosecutor Rohini Salian, who indicated that following a shift in the central government, NIA officials urged her to take a lenient approach towards the Malegaon blast accused,” he added.

Sapkal further remarked, “The state government must avoid double standards. Just as the accused have been acquitted today, we must remember that the first terrorist in Independent India, Nathuram Godse, assassinated Mahatma Gandhi. Among the seven accused in that case, six faced conviction, while Savarkar was acquitted, despite the Kapoor Commission report implicating him.”

Former Chief Minister and senior Congress figure Prithviraj Chavan claimed that the NIA failed to present evidence in court.

“The NIA operates under the jurisdiction of the Union Home Ministry. As long as the NIA functions under the oversight of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, similar verdicts may continue to emerge in the future,” he stated.

Leader of the Opposition in the State Council and Shiv Sena-UBT leader Ambadas Danve remarked, “While we (Shiv Sena-UBT) respect you (Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis), I heard your recent statement. It is a positive development that the accused in the Malegaon blast case have been acquitted. However, you failed to address the necessity of identifying the true masterminds behind the incident. A look into history reveals the support the undivided Balasaheb Thackeray-led Shiv Sena provided to those who have now been acquitted. We have been taught humility regarding our contributions.”

NCP Working President Praful Patel expressed approval of the NIA court's ruling.

“Everyone condemned the events in Malegaon, but the court's decision regarding the Malegaon blast should be acknowledged by all. We regard all citizens of our nation as 'Bharatiya'. The Pahalgam attack resulted in the deaths of Hindus, and we will label it a terrorist act,” he concluded.

Point of View
