Mumbai, Feb 27 (NationPress) The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (Mahavitaran) has successfully met its objective of increasing the number of beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Suryaghar Muft Bijalee Yojana (PMSMBY) to over 1.5 lakh and boosting the total power generation capacity to 500 MW in just 82 days.

This milestone was part of the goals outlined during the initial 100 days of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s administration, as stated by Mahavitaran Chairman and Managing Director Lokesh Chandra on Thursday.

Chandra noted that following Fadnavis's swearing-in on December 5 of last year, various departments were assigned 100-day targets to be accomplished by March 16, 2025.

“On December 6 last year, the total number of households benefiting from the PMSMBY was 71,437, with a total capacity of 283 MW. The objective was to raise the beneficiary households to 1.25 lakh and increase the total power generation capacity to 500 MW during the 100-day campaign. By February 26, the number of beneficiary households had risen to 1,28,470, achieving the target in 82 days. Previously, Mahavitaran had also reached its 100-day goal of installing over 1.5 lakh solar agriculture pumps under the Magel Tyala Saur Krishi Pump Yojana in just 60 days,” he said.

Chandra mentioned that rooftop solar plants were installed in 57,033 households within 82 days. To date, a total subsidy of Rs 800 crore has been deposited directly into the accounts of beneficiary families under this scheme.

Nagpur district, the home of CM Fadnavis and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, ranks first in the state for benefiting from the PMSMBY, with 21,027 beneficiary households.

Following Nagpur, other districts include Pune (9,875 houses), Jalgaon (9,489 houses), Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (8,814 houses), Nashik (8,558 houses), Amravati (7,119 houses), Kolhapur (6,291 houses), Dhule (4,187 houses), and Solapur (4,007 houses).

Under the PMSMBY, electricity is generated by installing rooftop solar plants on residential properties. The central government offers a subsidy of Rs 30,000 for a one-kilowatt system, Rs 60,000 for a two-kilowatt system, and Rs 78,000 for a three-kilowatt project, depending on the capacity of the rooftop solar installation. The maximum subsidy available is Rs 78,000.

Mahavitaran also provides free net meters for beneficiaries. As these rooftop solar projects generate more electricity than required for household use, the electricity bills can be reduced to zero. Any surplus energy produced can be sold back to Mahavitaran.
