Koraput Police Uncover Major Interstate Hashish Oil Operation, Seizing ₹225 Crore in Contraband
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bhubaneswar, Feb 26 (NationPress) In a significant operation, the Koraput Police successfully dismantled an interstate hashish oil production unit on Thursday, resulting in the recovery of 1,800 liters of hashish oil valued at approximately ₹225 crore.
Through the receipt of detailed and actionable intelligence regarding suspicious activities in the area, a raid was strategically organized under the leadership of Koraput Superintendent of Police, Rohit Varma.
In response to this intelligence, a well-coordinated operation was executed in the densely forested region surrounding the Jholaput Reservoir, located within the jurisdiction of the Padua Police Station, near the Odisha–Andhra Pradesh border.
To ensure complete operational confidentiality and to catch the suspects off guard, police teams opted to avoid traditional roadways.
Instead, they proceeded discreetly via boats across the reservoir and then trekked through challenging jungle paths to reach their target location.
According to sources within the Koraput Police, the decision to approach the site through waterways and forest trails was designed to keep the movements of law enforcement concealed and to avoid alerting the suspected drug traffickers.
“The isolated nature of the area, coupled with the difficult terrain and the rapid assembly and disassembly of the manufacturing setups, presented significant challenges for the police during previous operations,” stated the Koraput Police in an official announcement.
During the raid, authorities confiscated 1,800 liters of hashish oil, valued around ₹225 crore, along with 1,000 kg of Ganja worth ₹5 crore.
Police officials have indicated that the key figures behind the operation have been identified and efforts are underway to apprehend them.
Additionally, the Koraput Police discovered preliminary evidence linking the individuals operating the manufacturing unit to drug traffickers outside the state.
In a separate but related operation in Koraput district, police detained four individuals, including two interstate smugglers from Haryana, in connection with the confiscation of 1,143 kg of Ganja valued at over ₹5 crore under the jurisdiction of the Nandpur Police Station.
Law enforcement sources indicated that two of those arrested are suppliers from Semiliguda in Koraput, while the other two are recipients hailing from Haryana.
It is noteworthy that previously, over 62 kg of hashish oil was seized in two distinct incidents under the Chitrakonda Police Station in Malkangiri district of Odisha. Due to the bulkiness of Ganja, its transportation is arduous and entails a higher risk of detection by security forces.
Consequently, drug traffickers have increasingly adopted innovative methods, such as converting Ganja into hashish oil and transporting smaller quantities of this high-value contraband. Remarkably, the market price of one liter of hashish oil is nearly 25 times that of one kilogram of Ganja, incentivizing criminals to produce and traffic hashish oil for greater profits.
