West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suvendu Adhikari arrived simultaneously at Ward No. 73 of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation in Chakraberia on Wednesday, 29 April to inspect a polling booth — yet the two political rivals did not exchange a word. The brief but charged encounter unfolded as voting for the second phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections was underway, with 142 seats across south Bengal going to the polls.

The Bhabanipur Flashpoint

Bhabanipur has emerged as one of the most closely watched constituencies in this election cycle. The seat is widely perceived as a direct contest between the ruling All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the opposition BJP. Its political weight is amplified by the fact that it is Banerjee's traditional stronghold — a constituency she has relied on as a political lifeline more than once.

The BJP's decision to field Suvendu Adhikari as the challenger here is deliberate and pointed. Adhikari is simultaneously contesting from Nandigram, where he defeated Banerjee in the 2021 Assembly elections — a result that shook the TMC despite its landslide statewide victory. Nandigram had already gone to the polls in the first phase of this election.

A Rematch Rooted in 2021

The Bhabanipur contest is widely seen as a symbolic rematch of Nandigram. In 2021, Adhikari defeated Banerjee — once his political mentor — by a margin of 1,956 votes after switching from the TMC to the BJP ahead of that election. The loss forced Banerjee to return to the Assembly via a Bhabanipur bypoll, where she defeated BJP candidate Priyanka Tibrewal by a margin exceeding 58,000 votes.

Bhabanipur has remained a TMC bastion since 2011. Senior party leader Subrata Bakshi initially won the seat before vacating it, enabling Banerjee to enter the Assembly through a bypoll after assuming office as chief minister. She retained the constituency in the 2016 elections as well.

What Is at Stake for Each Side

For the Trinamool Congress, Bhabanipur is a matter of prestige directly tied to the authority of its chief minister on her home turf. A loss here would carry outsized symbolic damage, regardless of the party's overall performance across the state.

For the BJP, and particularly for Adhikari, a victory against Banerjee in this constituency would send a powerful political signal — validating his 2021 Nandigram win as no fluke and potentially destabilising the TMC's narrative of incumbency strength. Notably, this would be the second consecutive election in which Adhikari directly challenged Banerjee in her own political territory.

Polling Day Atmosphere

As voting progressed across south Bengal's 142 seats on Wednesday, Bhabanipur remained at the centre of political attention. The simultaneous presence of both Banerjee and Adhikari at the same booth — without any interaction — captured the intensity of the rivalry in a single, wordless image.
