Mamata Banerjee: Trinamool Will Back Women’s Bill Without Delimitation
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, April 17 (NationPress) West Bengal's Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, announced on Friday that the Trinamool Congress will endorse the Women’s Reservation (Amendment) Bill proposed by the Centre, on the condition that it does not include any additional provisions, especially those concerning delimitation.
“We are ready to support the Women’s Reservation (Amendment) Bill. However, we will not permit any other agendas to be attached to it,” the Chief Minister stated during a campaign rally in Dum Dum, located in the North 24 Parganas district, amidst the critical two-phase assembly elections taking place in West Bengal later this month.
While she refrained from detailing her concerns regarding “other agendas,” her remarks clearly suggested apprehension towards the delimitation provisions that the Centre plans to integrate with the Bill.
During a similar campaign event in Mathabhanga, Cooch Behar district, she expressed that the delimitation provisions associated with the Women’s Reservation Amendment Bill were merely a tactic to further divide West Bengal.
She questioned, “What is the necessity of introducing delimitation provisions alongside the Women’s Reservation Amendment Bill? This is yet another scheme to fragment West Bengal. It also poses a risk of removing names from the voters’ list in the future and could lead to the introduction of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state.”
On the same day, the Chief Minister vehemently criticized the Union Government for conducting raids at various locations in and around Kolkata, including residences and offices of two Trinamool Congress leaders, one being a party candidate and the other a proposer in her nomination.
She accused, “They are coming to West Bengal with illicit funds before the elections and are executing raids at my party candidates’ homes and offices. They even attempted to inspect my chartered flight and scrutinize my security personnel. They are cowardly and lack the courage to confront us politically, hence resorting to such actions.”
She also urged central investigative agencies to act fairly in the national interest, instead of blindly executing orders from a specific political faction.
“We harbor no animosity towards you. However, I implore you to act with impartiality,” she added.
Furthermore, the Chief Minister advised her party's councillors in Kolkata to tread carefully, as there is a significant risk of imminent arrests.
