Kolkata, Dec 4 (NationPress) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee declared on Thursday that the residents of Murshidabad will categorically reject any form of politics centered around riots. This statement followed the suspension of Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir, who was accused of engaging in communal politics by planning to establish a mosque similar to the demolished Babri Masjid in Murshidabad district.
Speaking at a gathering in Berhampore, located in the same district, CM Banerjee emphasized: "The Trinamool Congress stands firmly against communal politics. The history of Murshidabad is significant; Siraj-ud-Daulah is honored in every household here. This region is rich with the heritage of Nawabs and sacred sites for various faiths. The people will not endorse riot-driven politics.
Earlier, the party took decisive action by suspending MLA Kabir after he indicated plans to lay the foundation for the mosque on December 6, which prompted backlash from fellow party members.
During her speech, the Chief Minister remarked: “Murshidabad has always been a beacon of unity. History shows us that betrayal leads to destruction, while harmony fosters strength. We will defend that unity and maintain communal peace at all costs.”
Additionally, CM Banerjee accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of exploiting religious sentiments as the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections approach, warning against the dangers of community polarization.
“The BJP is manipulating religious issues surrounding the SIR incident. A significant number of victims were Hindus. Don’t undermine your own foundation,” she cautioned, stressing that divisive tactics harm society overall.
Furthermore, she asserted, “I will not permit the implementation of NRC or detention centers in Bengal. Even if it costs me dearly, no one will be expelled from our state.”
CM Banerjee reiterated her commitment to making West Bengal a safe, inclusive haven for all communities, reaffirming her government’s dedication to upholding constitutional principles.
“We will protect Waqf properties from encroachment; securing minorities is my obligation,” she declared, vowing to take a firm stance against any actions that threaten communal harmony.
