Kolkata, Jan 17 (NationPress) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has chosen not to attend the inauguration of the research centre dedicated to Jyoti Basu, the late prominent Indian Marxist and former Chief Minister.

The inauguration is scheduled for Friday, and she received an invitation from the Left political party.

Despite the invitation extended by the CPI(M) leadership in the state, she has opted out, citing her ongoing administrative commitments.

According to Robin Deb, a member of the CPI(M) central committee from West Bengal, the veteran party leader and Left Front chairman, Biman Bose, had personally invited Mamata Banerjee to attend the inauguration.

“However, we have received word from the state secretariat that the Chief Minister will be unable to attend the event,” Deb stated.

The inauguration will coincide with the 15th death anniversary of the former and longest-serving Chief Minister of West Bengal, with Prakash Karat, the CPI(M) politburo coordinator and former general secretary, in attendance.

Also present will be Md Salim, the state secretary of CPI(M) in West Bengal, alongside Dr Suryakanta Mishra, a member of the party politburo.

A senior member of the CPI(M) state committee explained that the invitation to Mamata Banerjee was extended because the research centre is intended to maintain an independent identity, and it is named after the former Chief Minister. Thus, the party leadership felt it was appropriate to invite the current Chief Minister to the inauguration.

“This is not a political move. However, we have now been informed by the state secretariat that the Chief Minister cannot attend the inauguration due to her administrative responsibilities,” the committee member added.

On Friday, the CPI(M)'s central committee meeting will also commence at New Town, located on the northern outskirts of Kolkata. The political resolutions for the upcoming party Congress may be finalized during the two-day central committee meeting beginning on Friday.

The party Congress is set to take place in April this year in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, where a new general secretary will be appointed, a position that has remained vacant since the passing of former general secretary Sitaram Yechury last year.
