Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 22 (NationPress) Veteran Congress figure Mani Shankar Aiyar ignited political discourse on Sunday by declaring that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee plays a pivotal role in the sustainability of the Opposition INDIA bloc, while simultaneously revealing his own doubts regarding his standing within the Congress party.
In an interview with IANS, Aiyar emphasized that the INDIA alliance would become insignificant without Mamata Banerjee’s involvement.
"Without Mamata di, the 'I', 'N', 'D', 'I', 'A' of the INDIA coalition will disappear. Mamata Banerjee is the cornerstone of this alliance," he stated, mentioning that leaders from regional parties like DMK Chief M.K. Stalin, Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav, and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav could also assume significant roles.
Aiyar pointedly remarked that Rahul Gandhi should permit leaders from smaller parties to lead the INDIA bloc rather than striving for leadership himself.
The seasoned Congress leader also hinted at a strained connection with his party, referencing comments by the party's General Secretary (Organisation) K. C. Venugopal that hinted at potential disciplinary action against him.
"I still consider myself a part of Congress, yet it appears they might be moving towards my expulsion. However, I have not received any formal notification," Aiyar mentioned.
Despite reports of his expulsion, he reiterated that he had not been officially informed.
"For the Congress perspective, consult a Congressman," Aiyar stated, while expressing his belief that many within Congress support Mamata Banerjee.
Reflecting on his early political ties with Mamata Banerjee, Aiyar recounted his brief stint with the Trinamool Congress in 1997, during which he served as the first National Secretary before departing shortly after, concluding that the party was entrenched in Bengali identity.
On International Mother Language Day, he underscored the significance of language in cultural identity, referencing the Bengali language movement led by Bangladesh’s founder, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
