Kolkata, Aug 7 (NationPress) On the solemn occasion of the death anniversary of the legendary Nobel Prize winner and esteemed Indian poet Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, West Bengal's Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reasserted her position regarding the reported mistreatment of Bengali-speaking individuals in states governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party.
In a message shared on her official X account, Chief Minister Banerjee honored Rabindranath Tagore, expressing that the renowned poet remains her beacon of hope amid a climate where Bengali speakers are purportedly facing discrimination across various regions in the country.
"On this day commemorating the globally celebrated poet Rabindranath Tagore, I extend my sincere tributes to our cherished Thakur. His spirit is with us every day and every moment. Especially now, when fear looms over Bengalis for simply speaking their mother tongue, he serves as our motivator to resist," the Chief Minister articulated in her social media update.
Chief Minister Banerjee emphasized that Tagore was the most extraordinary talent in the Bengali language's history, and thus, the sorrow of seeing his language under siege is profoundly felt.
"Where the mind is free from fear and the head is held high—Rabindranath is our guiding star in shaping a better India," she stated.
In her online message, she also recalled that in honor of Tagore's legacy, she initiated a series of protest rallies against the alleged harassment of Bengali-speaking people in BJP-controlled areas, starting from Bolpur-Santiniketan in Birbhum district last month, acknowledging the location's historical and cultural ties to Tagore and Visva Bharati University.
"From his Shantiniketan, we (Trinamool Congress) have launched a movement against language terrorism. As long as this animosity towards Bengalis continues, our struggle will remain steadfast. Today marks a day for us to pledge anew—we will not accept language terrorism against our community," the Chief Minister concluded.
