Kolkata, Aug 14 (NationPress) The historical significance of Bengal and its people has been remarkable, asserted West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday.
“Bengal has made the most substantial contributions to the Indian freedom struggle. The highest number of sacrifices came from Bengal. We take immense pride in our Bengal,” the Chief Minister stated while addressing an Independence Day Eve rally in the outskirts of Kolkata.
During her speech, she criticized the BJP and the Election Commission of India (ECI) regarding their special intensive revision.
“The true motive behind the special intensive revision appears to be an attempt to enforce the NRC and CAA in Bengal. Which citizens born before 1982 possess their birth certificates? The central government continually disrespects West Bengal. However, the people of West Bengal will not stand for this disrespect,” she asserted.
Additionally, she addressed the reported attacks and harassment faced by Bengali speakers in states governed by the BJP.
“Individuals are imprisoned for communicating in Bengali. Is speaking Bengali a crime? Why should anyone speaking Bengali be labeled as a Bangladeshi?” she questioned.
Those promoting discrimination against Bengalis seem unaware of the language spoken by icons such as Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, Kavi Nazrul Islam, and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, she noted.
She also raised concerns about why AADHAR cards, which the current Union government introduced for a fee, are not accepted as valid documents for the special intensive review.
“My life has been a continuous struggle. If needed, I will fight again. But I will never permit the infringement of voting rights,” the Chief Minister declared.
