'Bengal Values Those Who Value Bengal': Mamata Banerjee's Greeting to New Governor
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 12 (NationPress) Following the swearing-in of R.N. Ravi, a former high-ranking officer of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and the previous Governor of Tamil Nadu, as the 22nd Governor of West Bengal on Thursday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s initial remark to him during their post-ceremony conversation was that 'Bengal cherishes those who cherish Bengal.'
After the swearing-in, the Chief Minister greeted the new Governor by draping a ceremonial cloak around his shoulders. During this encounter, she subtly conveyed her message to Ravi.
“Bengal and its people embrace individuals from diverse linguistic backgrounds. Peaceful coexistence is the hallmark of Bengal. However, the essence is that Bengal cherishes those who cherish Bengal. This defines the character of the Bengali populace,” the Chief Minister expressed to the Governor.
“Indeed, West Bengal stands as the intellectual and cultural nucleus of India,” the Governor acknowledged in response to the Chief Minister.
Political analysts interpret the statement, “Bengal cherishes those who cherish Bengal,” as a nuanced communication directed towards the new Governor.
“The implication is that a harmonious relationship between the State Secretariat and the Governor’s House will thrive only if the latter refrains from actions that may undermine the state's or the state government's interests. This message bears significance given the historical conflicts between the Governor’s House and the State Secretariat during the tenure of the current Trinamool Congress administration, which commenced with Jagdeep Dhankhar, who later ascended to the Vice Presidency, and continued through Ravi’s predecessor, C.V. Ananda Bose,” elaborated a local political analyst.
Ravi takes over from C.V. Ananda Bose, who unexpectedly resigned on the evening of March 5, with Ravi’s appointment announced the same evening. Ravi arrived in Kolkata on Wednesday, while Bose departed for his native Kerala.
Ravi is the second IB chief to serve as Governor of West Bengal in the last fifteen years. Before the pivotal Assembly elections in West Bengal in 2011, which ended the 34-year reign of the Left Front and ushered in the leadership of Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress, former IB chief and former National Security Adviser (NSA), M.K. Narayanan, was inaugurated as the then Governor.
