R.N. Ravi Sworn in as West Bengal's New Governor
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 12 (NationPress) R.N. Ravi, a distinguished former super-cop of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and ex-Governor of Tamil Nadu, officially took the oath as the new Governor of West Bengal on Thursday morning.
The swearing-in ceremony commenced at 11:30 a.m. at Lok Bhavan (previously known as Raj Bhavan) in Kolkata. The Calcutta High Court Chief Justice, Sujoy Paul, administered the oath in the presence of notable figures including West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Speaker of the Assembly Biman Bandopadhyay, and Biman Bose, the Chairman of the Left Front.
Interestingly, the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, was absent despite receiving an invitation, and there was no representation from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the event.
Ravi takes over from C.V. Ananda Bose, who unexpectedly resigned on March 5, the same day Ravi's appointment was announced. Ravi arrived in Kolkata the day before, while Bose departed for his hometown in Kerala.
Before his departure, Bose shared an emotional “Open Letter” on Lok Bhavan’s social media, expressing his enduring bond with the people of West Bengal.
Ravi becomes the second IB super-cop to be appointed as the West Bengal Governor in the past fifteen years.
Prior to the pivotal 2011 Assembly elections that ended a 34-year Left Front rule and ushered in the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress, former IB chief and National Security Adviser M.K. Narayanan served as the Governor.
This appointment of former IB super-cop Ravi comes at a crucial time as West Bengal prepares for significant Assembly elections later this year.
