Kolkata, March 5 (NationPress) In a surprising turn of events just before the forthcoming Assembly elections, West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose has officially stepped down from his role on Thursday.

Currently in New Delhi, he submitted his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu.

While the Governor's office had yet to confirm the news at the time of reporting, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee released a statement acknowledging the resignation.

In her remarks, the Chief Minister stated that she received confirmation of Bose's resignation from Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who also indicated that R.N. Ravi, the current Governor of Tamil Nadu, would take over as West Bengal’s new Governor.

However, it remains unclear whether Ravi will be appointed as the acting Governor or the permanent one.

"I am astonished and deeply troubled by the abrupt resignation of Shri C. V. Ananda Bose, the Governor of West Bengal. I am unaware of the reasons behind his resignation at this time. However, given the current scenario, I would not be surprised if the Governor faced pressure from the Union Home Minister to align with specific political agendas ahead of the upcoming State Assembly elections," CM Banerjee expressed on her X account.

Additionally, the Chief Minister asserted that the Union Home Minister did not consult her regarding the replacement of Bose with Ravi.

"The Union Home Minister merely informed me of Shri R.N. Ravi's appointment as the Governor of West Bengal, without any consultation, which goes against established conventions," the Chief Minister emphasized, stating that such actions undermine the essence of the Constitution of India and threaten the foundational principles of the nation’s federal structure.

"The Centre must honor the values of cooperative federalism and avoid unilateral decisions that diminish democratic norms and the dignity of states," Banerjee added.

Bose assumed the Governor's office on November 17, 2022, with his term set to last until November 2027. His resignation comes a significant 20 months before the conclusion of his tenure.

During his time as Governor, Bose was outspoken on various state issues, openly criticizing several policies of the West Bengal government.
