Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 12 (NationPress) Following his oath-taking ceremony as the 22nd Governor of West Bengal on Thursday, R.N. Ravi, a former Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer and ex-Governor of Tamil Nadu, shared a heartfelt message emphasizing the state's rich intellectual and cultural heritage.
He expressed that he considers this role to be a significant privilege and opportunity.
“I feel incredibly fortunate and deeply honored to have the chance to serve the people of West Bengal, a remarkable land that has served as the spiritual, intellectual, and cultural heart of Bharat for millennia,” Ravi stated.
He highlighted that West Bengal is where the timeless wisdom of the Vedas flourished thousands of years ago. He also noted that it is a region where Gautama Buddha's teachings found new interpretations and where the noble tradition of Bhakti grew, inspiring the national freedom struggle.
In his message, Ravi reflected on the land’s continuous gift of extraordinary visionaries throughout various periods.
“During tumultuous times of foreign invasions and occupations that systematically aimed to erase our culture and identity, this region birthed numerous remarkable figures and divine souls, including Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Bhagwan Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Swami Vivekananda, Babu Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay—whose *Vande Mataram* became the battle cry of our freedom movement—Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, revolutionary spiritual leader Sri Aurobindo, and the fearless freedom fighters Subhas Chandra Bose and Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee,” Ravi remarked.
“I pray to Maa Durga for the wisdom and strength necessary to wholeheartedly serve the people of this land,” he added.
Ravi takes over from C.V. Ananda Bose, who unexpectedly resigned from the position on March 5, with Ravi’s appointment being confirmed on the same evening. Ravi arrived in Kolkata on Wednesday, while Bose departed for his hometown in Kerala.
Ravi is the second former IB officer to assume the role of Governor of West Bengal in the last fifteen years.
Before the significant West Bengal Assembly elections in 2011, which marked the end of the 34-year-long Left Front rule and the onset of the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress government, former IB chief and National Security Adviser M.K. Narayanan was sworn in as the Governor of the state.
