Kolkata, Dec 27 (NationPress) A man was apprehended in the Nadia district of West Bengal on Saturday for the brutal act of hacking his niece-in-law to death due to a family conflict, as reported by police.
The tragic event unfolded in the Gopinathpur panchayat area, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Palashipara police station in Nadia.
Following a complaint filed by the victim's family, authorities managed to apprehend the suspect near his residence after conducting an overnight search. He is set to be presented before a local court, where police intend to request his custody for further interrogation.
The victim, identified as Shampa Biswas, 27 years old, had been married to Uttam Biswas for a few years.
Community members reported that a long-standing family feud existed between Uttam Biswas and his uncle, Sufal Biswas, aged 52. The disagreement escalated into violence on Friday. During an altercation between the two families, the uncle allegedly attacked Shampa with a sharp object, striking her in the neck.
The uproar from the families alerted nearby residents, who rushed to the scene to find Shampa lying in a pool of blood. She was promptly taken to Palashipara Rural Hospital, where medical personnel pronounced her dead upon arrival.
“The tensions within the family had been escalating since Thursday. The following day, after a brief argument, my uncle fetched a machete from his home and assaulted my sister-in-law in the neck. The entire incident unfolded unexpectedly. My sister-in-law was taken to the hospital, and then the police were alerted. Officers arrived and questioned everyone,” recounted Uttam Biswas's brother, Anup Biswas, to local reporters.
Meanwhile, Sufal Biswas initially fled the scene but was subsequently located and arrested, according to police reports.
“After an extensive search overnight, the suspect was taken into custody yesterday. A murder charge has been filed against him, and we will be seeking his custody for further investigation,” stated a senior officer from the Nadia district police.
Shampa's husband has called for severe repercussions for his uncle, as confirmed by law enforcement officials.
The body has been sent to Shaktinagar District Hospital for a post-mortem examination, according to police sources.
