Mathura, April 5 (NationPress) Authorities in Mathura apprehended a 29-year-old individual, accused of raping and robbing a woman from Haryana, after a police encounter, officials reported on Sunday.
The suspect, named Pawan Kumar and hailing from Mal Farah village in Mathura, suffered a gunshot wound to his leg during the confrontation and has been transported to a medical facility for care.
A police unit from Jaint police station, directed by Inspector-in-Charge Umesh Chandra Tripathi, was performing routine checks near Suncity on Saturday night.
At approximately 9:53 p.m., the officers signaled for a motorcyclist to halt due to suspicions. Rather than comply, the individual attempted to escape by turning his motorcycle around and allegedly fired at the police.
In response, law enforcement returned fire, wounding the suspect in the leg, which led to his immediate capture at the scene.
Upon questioning, authorities discovered that Pawan Kumar had been using a fictitious online persona named Abhay Fauji.
Through this false identity, he allegedly threatened a woman from Palwal district in Haryana, warning her of potential harm to her family and pressuring her to meet him at Chhatikara.
Police stated that he then transported the victim on his motorcycle to a guest house known as Raj Guest House, where he assaulted her inside a room before discarding her near the Chhatikara bridge.
Further investigations revealed that the perpetrator transferred Rs 15,000 from the victim's phone online and also stole Rs 4,000 in cash along with her earrings before fleeing.
During his arrest, police confiscated a homemade firearm, two empty cartridges, a live round, and the motorcycle implicated in the crime.
Circle Officer (Sadar) Pitampal Singh noted that the suspect has an extensive criminal record, with 11 serious offenses logged against him, which include rape, attempted murder, robbery, and violations of the NDPS Act in both Mathura and Bharatpur district of Rajasthan, covering areas such as Kotwali, Chiksana, and Kumher.
The arresting team comprised Jaint police station head Umesh Chandra Tripathi, Inspector Vivek Kumar, women sub-inspectors Kajal Bhardwaj and Priya Siwach, along with members from the surveillance unit.
Officials confirmed that the injured suspect has been moved to a hospital in Vrindavan, where he is receiving medical attention under police watch.
