Varanasi, April 7 (NationPress) Uttar Pradesh Police have apprehended six suspects in relation to the alleged gang rape of a 19-year-old woman in Varanasi.
The tragic event reportedly unfolded over a period of seven days after the victim was reported missing from her home on March 29.
The victim’s father indicated that an FIR was lodged at the Lalpur Pandeypur police station following the family's complaint. The six accused, hailing from the Hukulganj and Lallapura areas, were arrested on the same night. The victim had left her home accompanied by a male friend on March 29, a practice she had previously engaged in without incident. However, her failure to return prompted her family to file a missing person report on April 4.
She was subsequently discovered at the Pandeypur intersection, where it is alleged the accused abandoned her.
Upon her recovery, the victim recounted the details of her harrowing experience to her father, who then filed a complaint, resulting in the registration of a gang rape case.
The assault supposedly occurred at various locations including a hookah bar, a hotel, a lodge, and a guest house.
Chandra Kant Meena, DCP of the Varuna Zone, confirmed that a case has been formally registered, and the six suspects are in custody.
"This case is currently under investigation," stated DCP Meena.
He further elaborated that on April 6, a rape complaint was received at the Lalpur Pandeypur police station, noting that the incidents took place between March 29 and April 4.
"The victim's family first reported her missing on March 29. She was recovered by police on April 4. It is important to note that neither the victim nor her family had submitted a complaint of sexual assault; the rape complaint was only filed on April 6," he clarified.
DCP Meena also responded to media claims suggesting that the victim was a minor, asserting that she is indeed 19 years old.
"Six individuals have been detained, and interrogations are currently ongoing," he added.
DCP Meena emphasized that legal proceedings are in progress as the investigation continues.
