Ballia man beaten to death with sticks; police hunt 4-6 attackers
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
A 35-year-old man was beaten to death with sticks by a group of assailants in Uttar Pradesh's Ballia district on Monday evening, 15 September 2025, police confirmed on Tuesday. The victim, identified as Umesh Chaurasia, a resident of Karni village under the Ubhaon police station area, was returning home from Malipur village with puja items when he was ambushed near Kaithi (Mathiya).
How the Attack Unfolded
According to police, Chaurasia was riding his motorcycle when he reached the Kaithi (Mathiya) area at approximately 7:45 pm. A group of miscreants, allegedly lying in wait near the location, stopped his motorcycle and assaulted him with sticks. The number of attackers is estimated to be between four and six.
A second person travelling with Chaurasia on the motorcycle also sustained minor injuries during the attack. Locals rushed Chaurasia to the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Seer, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
What Police Said
ASP Dinesh Kumar Shukla stated: “Information was received today that near the Sankat Mochan Mathiya bend, under the Ubhaon police station limits, Umesh Chaurasia was involved in a physical altercation with some youths residing in a neighbouring village. During the clash, Umesh Chaurasia sustained a lathi blow to his head. He was immediately rushed to CHC Ubhaon for medical treatment, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.”
Shukla further added: “According to initial assessment, it has been found, through the victim’s nephew, that a group of men from a neighbouring village attacked Umesh. Subsequently, a team was formed to apprehend the suspects. Further investigation is underway.”
Investigation Under Way
A team from the Ubhaon police station reached the spot shortly after receiving information about the attack. Chaurasia’s body has been taken into custody and sent for a postmortem examination. Investigators are questioning residents of the surrounding area and examining available evidence to ascertain the exact motive and identify all those involved.
Notably, the attack took place on a stretch of road beyond Malipur village, and police are treating the ambush as premeditated, given that the assailants were reportedly waiting in the area. This comes amid a pattern of rural road ambushes in eastern Uttar Pradesh that have drawn repeated calls for improved night-time policing on isolated stretches.
What Happens Next
Police have formed a dedicated team to apprehend the accused, with the circle of suspects narrowed, according to officials, to men from a neighbouring village. The postmortem report is expected to provide clarity on the exact nature of injuries. Further arrests are anticipated as the investigation progresses.
