Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Thursday, 28 May declared that Manipuri cinema stands as a potent vehicle of cultural expression and storytelling, capturing the aspirations, struggles, identity, and resilience of the state's people. Speaking at the 16th Manipur State Film Awards (MSFA) 2024 ceremony held at the Palace Auditorium of the MSFDS in Imphal, Bhalla underscored the industry's enduring rootedness in local heritage.

Governor's Message to Filmmakers

Governor Bhalla noted that films from Manipur have consistently showcased the state's rich cultural heritage and social realities, while simultaneously reaching audiences far beyond the region through meaningful narratives and artistic excellence. He urged young filmmakers to preserve local stories, languages, traditions, and values even as they explore new perspectives and innovative cinematic techniques. Bhalla also acknowledged the collective contribution of filmmakers, actors, writers, technicians, critics, and researchers to the growth of Manipuri cinema.

Chief Minister Calls for Greater Recognition

Chief Minister N. Biren Singh addressed the gathering and emphasised that cinema plays a vital role in shaping human motivation and social values. He acknowledged that the Manipuri film industry operates against the headwinds of a smaller audience base and persistent challenges, yet called on the industry to continue striving for growth and wider recognition beyond the state. Singh also expressed his government's support for the promotion and strengthening of Manipuri cinema.

Lifetime Achievement and Awards Ceremony

The centrepiece of the evening was the conferral of the MSFDS Lifetime Achievement Award 2024 on Ngangbam Swarnajit Singh, recognised for his pioneering role as Manipur's first professional artist in cinema. Governor Bhalla, joined by Chief Minister Singh and Art and Culture and Tourism Minister Govindas Konthoujam, distributed awards across non-feature and feature film categories. The official award catalogue was also released at the event.

Cultural Showcase and Significance

The ceremony featured a live demonstration of Thang-Ta, the traditional Manipuri martial art form, performed by the Huyen Lallong Manipur Thang-Ta Cultural Association — a reminder of the deep cultural roots that Manipuri cinema draws upon. Organised by the MSFDS, the State Film Awards are the highest state honour in Manipuri cinema, celebrating excellence, creativity, and outstanding contributions to the industry. The award aims to encourage artistic achievement and support the continued growth of the Manipuri film sector.
