Imphal, April 23: Khongjom Day 2025 was observed with deep solemnity at the Khongjom War Memorial in Thoubal district, Manipur, as the state paid its annual tribute to the brave warriors who laid down their lives resisting British forces during the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891. The commemoration, held every year on April 23, drew senior constitutional and political dignitaries who led the ceremonial honours at the historic site.

Governor and Chief Minister Lead Tribute Ceremony

Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh presided over the solemn function, leading a distinguished gathering in the ceremonial laying of floral wreaths at the war memorial. Floral tributes were also offered at the statue of legendary warrior Paona Brajabashi, accompanied by a Gun Salute in his honour.

The tribute ceremony followed a structured military protocol, including a Guard of Honour, General Salute, Reverse Arms, sounding of the Last Post, a two-minute silence, followed by Slope Arms and Order Arms. Tarpan was offered at the Khongjom River, and homage through Sankirtana was paid by the attending dignitaries.

The programme commenced with a Sankirtana performance by artistes of the Manipur State Kala Akademi, setting a deeply reverential tone for the proceedings.

Governor Bhalla's Address: Unity, Resilience, and Patriotism

Speaking at the gathering, Governor Bhalla described Khongjom Day as a profoundly emotional occasion that commemorates the courage and sacrifice of Manipur's sons who fought valiantly against a vastly superior colonial military force. He emphasised that the Battle of Khongjom stands as an enduring symbol of honour, patriotism, and unwavering determination.

Bhalla noted that Manipuri warriors, though outnumbered and ill-equipped, chose courage over capitulation to defend their sovereignty — a spirit that resonates powerfully even today. He called Khongjom Day not merely an occasion for remembrance but one for deep reflection on unity, self-respect, and resilience.

The Governor urged citizens to uphold integrity in public life, maintain communal harmony, respect the rule of law, and remain committed to collective welfare as the most meaningful tribute to the martyrs. He stressed that true patriotism lies in building an inclusive and progressive society, empowering the youth, and preserving Manipur's rich cultural heritage.

Chief Minister Singh Pays Homage to 1891 War Heroes

Chief Minister N. Biren Singh — referred to as Yumnam Khemchand Singh in official communications — expressed immense pride in the Manipuri identity, rooted in the extraordinary bravery displayed by forefathers during the 1891 Anglo-Manipur War. He paid specific homage to revered leaders and warriors including Maharaj Kulachandra, Yuvraj Tikendrajit, Paona Brajabashi, Chongtha Mia, and Chinglensana.

The Chief Minister stated that the supreme sacrifices of these heroes and their steadfast commitment to defending Manipur's sovereignty ensured the preservation of the state's cultural and territorial integrity across generations.

CM Addresses Tronglaobi Incident Amid State-Wide Protests

In a significant departure from the ceremonial tone, the Chief Minister also addressed the deeply sensitive Tronglaobi incident in Bishnupur district, in which two minor children were killed and their mother seriously wounded on April 7. He expressed profound sorrow and grief over the tragedy, which has triggered widespread protests across Manipur.

Singh informed the gathering that the government has held multiple rounds of discussions with the Joint Action Committee and the families of the victims, and has proposed extending all possible assistance. He appealed to citizens to refrain from activities that could impede developmental work or deepen divisions among communities.

The Chief Minister also conveyed his gratitude to the people of Manipur for ensuring the peaceful and dignified observance of Khongjom Day despite the ongoing unrest — a gesture that underscored both the resilience and the complex ground realities of the state.

Senior Officials and Public Attend the Solemn Observance

The ceremony was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho, Home Minister Konthoujam Govindas Singh, Minister of Art and Culture Kh. Loken Singh, MLAs from various Assembly constituencies, and senior civil, police, and army officials, alongside members of the general public.

This comes amid a broader context of ethnic tensions and civil unrest that have persisted in Manipur since May 2023, making the message of unity and communal harmony delivered at Khongjom Day particularly significant.
