Key Takeaways
Imphal, Jan 30 (NationPress) Senior officials from the Manipur government have urged media professionals to avoid the dissemination of unverified information that may negatively affect society, underscoring the importance of responsible and fact-based journalism in today’s digital landscape.
During the inaugural Manipur Digital Media Conclave 2026 on Thursday, the Director of the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), Ahanthem Subhash Singh, emphasized the damaging consequences of unverified reports, stating that such news can harm an individual’s reputation and lead to psychological distress.
He pointed out that journalism has expanded beyond traditional print media, noting that digital journalism facilitates the rapid global sharing of news.
However, Singh remarked that creating swift, accurate, and responsible content has emerged as a significant challenge in the digital era, as online platforms wield considerable power in shaping public opinion.
The DIPR Director expressed concerns regarding whether some individuals identifying as digital journalists are primarily acting as content creators for monetary gain.
"Digital journalists must harness the power available to them to create authentic reporting and share fact-based news, rather than solely pursuing likes or views on social media," he stated.
Singh reiterated that independent journalism is vital, especially as the circulation of paid news becomes more prevalent.
He emphasized the essential role journalists play in combating such content and preserving the integrity of their profession.
Sharing his experiences, Singh noted that positive stories and government achievements frequently go unreported.
He proposed the establishment of a Journalism Award to recognize coverage of beneficial government initiatives for the public, suggesting that such recognition would enhance awareness of existing programs.
Singh also expressed his readiness to sponsor the proposed award.
Former DIPR Director and current Joint Secretary of the Tribal Affairs and Hills Department, Ngangom Uttam Singh, remarked that social media has gained considerable influence, with many members of the public depending on it for information.
He warned against irresponsible or unethical reporting, asserting that unverified news can harm individuals, communities, government agencies, and even the administration as a whole.
He added that while journalism holds the potential to create significant positive change, errors and misinformation can lead to dire repercussions.
Awards were presented in various categories during the conclave.
The Digital Journalist of the Year Award was awarded to Vangamla Salle of East Mojo; the Promising Digital Journalist Award went to Naorem Tanoranjan of Echel News Network; the Distinguished Service in Digital Journalism Award was given to Sobhapati Samom; the Best Credible Digital Media Page/Channel Award was presented to Wari Singbul; and the Jury's Choice Digital Journalism Award was bestowed upon Rebika Moirangthem of HY News.
