Guwahati/Imphal, April 4 (NationPress) In a notable turn of events, seven MLAs from various political factions and a BJP leader representing Manipur convened with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in Guwahati on Friday, as reported by sources.

During this meeting, both the Manipur legislators and Sarma, the convenor of the BJP-led North-East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), did not reveal the specifics of their discussions.

According to sources, the current political landscape was a topic of discussion, with the Manipur representatives urging Sarma to engage in the situation to facilitate a swift resolution.

The MLAs purportedly asked the Assam Chief Minister to encourage leaders from the Kuki community in Assam to contribute to reinstating peace and normalcy in Manipur.

Sarma, a prominent figure in BJP within the northeastern region, has recently maintained a low profile regarding developments in Manipur, despite earlier involvement in numerous meetings addressing the crisis.

Those MLAs who met with the Assam Chief Minister include senior BJP members L. Susindro Meitei and K Govindas Singh, both of whom have served as ministers, along with fellow BJP MLAs Shyamkumar Singh and Kh Ibomcha Singh, as well as two members from the National People’s Party (NPP), Shanti Singh and M. Rameshwar Singh, and Janata Dal (United) MLA Abdul Nasir.

Additionally, K. Sarat Singh, the general secretary of the state unit of BJP, was present at the meeting with Sarma.

Some of the MLAs were in Guwahati to partake in a festival celebrated by the tribal Thadou community.

The JD-U is a coalition partner of the BJP in Manipur. In November 2024, the NPP withdrew its support from the government led by N. Biren Singh, citing the administration’s inability to address the ethnic strife in the state.

The NPP is led by Conrad K. Sangma, Chief Minister of Meghalaya.

The NEDA, comprising major regional parties in the northeastern states, has been instrumental in expanding BJP's influence in the area.

President's Rule was imposed in Manipur on February 13, just four days after Biren Singh resigned from his position as the leader of a BJP-led government amid more than 23 months of ethnic violence.
