Imphal, May 4 (NationPress) The persistent smuggling of drugs from Myanmar remains a critical issue in the northeastern states of India, as security forces successfully intercepted brown sugar valued at Rs 48.7 crore in the Churachandpur district of Manipur, an official reported on Sunday.

The Churachandpur district of Manipur shares an unfenced border with both Myanmar and Mizoram.

A spokesperson for the police disclosed that, acting on confidential information, the forces apprehended a drug trafficker named Thianmuansiam Samte (32) from Gamgpimual village, recovering 5.016 kg of brown sugar in the process.

The drugs, valued at Rs 48.7 crore, were found in 418 soap cases. Additionally, a car and a mobile phone were seized from the suspect.

Authorities suspect that the narcotics, smuggled from Myanmar, were funneled into Manipur via Mizoram.

Expressing appreciation for the police's efforts, former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh remarked on X, “Great job, Churachandpur Police. Protecting us from illegal drugs is safeguarding our future.”

The Tengnoupal district in Manipur and Champhai district in Mizoram are notable hotspots for the smuggling of various illicit goods, including drugs, explosives, exotic animals, firearms, and other contraband from the neighboring Myanmar.

Experts, politicians, and senior security officials have indicated that drug-related issues are among the many factors contributing to Manipur's ethnic strife.

Despite stringent security measures, the influx of various drugs, particularly the highly addictive methamphetamine tablets from Myanmar, continues unabated in northeastern states.

Myanmar shares a sprawling 1,643 km unfenced border with four northeastern states—Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland, and Mizoram—making it a crucial transit hub for drugs such as heroin and methamphetamine.

The Chin state of Myanmar serves as a central point for smuggling diverse drugs, wildlife, and other contraband through six districts of Mizoram: Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual, and Serchhip.

Point of View

The relentless influx of drugs from Myanmar into northeastern India poses a severe threat to public health and safety. It underscores the urgent need for comprehensive strategies that not only address law enforcement but also tackle underlying socio-economic issues, ensuring a secure future for the region.
