Rewa, March 16 (NationPress) An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) lost his life while several other policemen sustained serious injuries during an attack by villagers in the Mauganj district of Rewa division in Madhya Pradesh, as reported by police on Saturday.

The assault occurred in Gadara village under Shahpur police station, situated approximately 70 km from Rewa.

Members of the tribal community who were involved also took an administrative official hostage.

Fortunately, the official was safely rescued after additional police forces arrived at the scene.

Reports indicate that local police responded to Gadara village following the alleged kidnapping and murder of a resident by a tribal family the previous night.

The victim has been identified as Sunny Dube, a local inhabitant.

This alleged murder incited conflict as individuals from both sides confronted each other.

However, the situation was eventually controlled after the district administration enforced Section 144 in the village.

When police returned to the area on Saturday, the tribal members attacked the police team and officials from the Mauganj administration.

The attackers pursued the police, wielding axes and other weapons, while also hurling stones and various objects.

Several police officers, including Traffic Inspector Sandeep Bharti and Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Ankita Sulya, were injured during the confrontation.

SDPO Sulya managed to lock herself in a room and was later rescued by an additional police team along with senior officers late on Saturday night.

More police personnel were dispatched from nearby police stations and from the neighboring Rewa district.

Mauganj, which was previously part of Rewa district, became a standalone district in 2023.

According to police, the incident is linked to the death of a tribal man named Ashok Kumar, who was involved in an alleged road accident a few months prior.

While police stated that Kumar died in the accident, his family claimed that Sunny Dube was responsible for his death.

On Friday, when the tribals located Sunny Dube alone, they abducted him and confined him in a room.

By the time police arrived on Saturday evening to rescue Dube, he had already died.

This incident has ignited political debates, with the Opposition Congress questioning the law and order situation in the state.

In response, State Congress President Jitu Patwari remarked, "The law and order situation in Madhya Pradesh has deteriorated to worse than 'jungle-raj'. Even the police are not safe."
