MBBS student found dead at SMS Medical College hostel in Jaipur
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
A final-year MBBS student was found dead under suspicious circumstances at the New RD Hostel of Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Medical College in Jaipur on Saturday, 9 May, police said. The student, identified as Nitin Yadav (22), a native of Alwar district, Rajasthan, was discovered hanging in the stairwell area on the eighth floor of the postgraduate hostel. He had been scheduled to appear for a Forensic Medicine examination on the same day.
How the Body Was Discovered
A woman security guard found Nitin hanging at approximately 5.30 a.m. and alerted the authorities. Police, along with a Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team, reached the spot at around 6.30 a.m., after which the body was brought down. No suicide note was recovered from the scene. Police subsequently seized the student's mobile phone and laptop for further investigation.
Key Details From CCTV Footage
SMS Police Station SHO Rajesh Sharma said Nitin had visited the SK Menon Hostel, an undergraduate facility, to study with friends earlier that night. At around 2 a.m., he reportedly told his friends he was returning to his rented flat near the '20 Dukaan' area close to Naila House in Jaipur. However, CCTV footage showed him entering the New RD Hostel — a postgraduate facility — at approximately 2.45 a.m. He was captured on camera on the seventh floor until 2.51 a.m. and remained visible in various parts of the hostel until around 3.15 a.m. Notably, no CCTV cameras were installed on the eighth floor, where the incident took place.
Family Raises Questions
Family members have questioned how an undergraduate student was able to enter a postgraduate hostel late at night. Hostel staff reportedly told investigators that the rope used in the incident had been brought inside the hostel in Nitin's laptop bag. The eighth floor of the hostel opens towards the terrace area, while the second, third, and fourth floors house male students and the fifth, sixth, and seventh floors house female students.
